Games that work without wi-fi

PlayNeon installs a service worker that caches each game the first time you play it, so any game you have opened once before will load again with no internet connection at all. A game you have never opened still needs a connection for its first load.

How does offline play actually work?

The first time you visit, your browser quietly installs a small script called a service worker. It sits between the site and the network, and it keeps a copy of the files each page needed. On later visits it hands you those copies when the network is unavailable, which is why a game you have already played opens on a plane, in a tunnel, or on a dead signal.

The distinction that matters is between a game you have opened and one you have not. Caching happens when you play, not in advance — nothing downloads the whole catalogue in the background behind your back. So the practical move before a flight is to open the two or three games you actually want, once each, while you still have signal.

What works offline and what does not?

Games you have already played work completely: the board, the input, the scoring and your saved best score are all local, and none of them was ever talking to a server. A game you have not opened yet will not load, because its code has never been fetched. Pages you have not visited fall back to a short offline notice rather than a browser error.

Because the games never needed the network in the first place, there is no degraded offline mode here. A cached game offline is identical to the same game online — same levels, same speed, same scoring.

  • Works offline: any game you have opened before, and your saved best scores
  • Works offline: pages you have already visited
  • Needs a connection: the first load of a game you have never played
  • Needs a connection: new games and content added since your last visit

How do I set it up before I lose signal?

Open PlayNeon while you still have a connection and play each game you want for a few seconds — that is enough to cache it. Then add the site to your home screen or desktop when your browser offers to, which makes it open in its own window without browser chrome.

Nothing is installed as a package and no device permissions are requested. Removing it later means deleting the shortcut and, if you want the cached files gone as well, clearing site data.

Do updates still reach me?

Yes, and this is the part offline caching usually gets wrong. The service worker always tries the network first for a page and only falls back to its cached copy when the network is unavailable — so a cached copy can never win over a live one while you are connected. That means edits to a game or its description reach you on your next online visit rather than lingering for days.

Files that cannot go stale are treated differently: the build output is content-addressed, so a new version arrives under a new name and is fetched fresh. Old caches are deleted whenever a new worker takes over.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play PlayNeon games offline?

Yes, with one condition: a game has to have been opened once while online. The site installs a service worker that caches each game as you play it, and any cached game then loads with no internet connection at all. A game you have never opened still needs a connection for its first load.

How do I make games available offline before a flight?

Open PlayNeon while you still have a connection and play each game you want for a few seconds — that caches it. Adding the site to your home screen when your browser offers to is optional, but it makes the games open in their own window without browser chrome.

Do my scores still save when I am offline?

Yes. Best scores are written to your browser's local storage on your own device and were never sent to a server, so saving works identically online and offline.

Will I still get updates if the games are cached?

Yes. The service worker tries the network first for every page and only uses its cached copy when the network is unavailable, so a cached page can never override a live one while you are connected. Updates reach you on your next online visit.
